9/11: The Jumpers’ Tragedy

Many don’t talk about it, because it’s so unpleasant, and extremely emotional. It’s about the Jumpers, i.e. the people who “jumped” from the WTC towers before they collapsed. Some estimate that at least 200 people jumped to their deaths that morning, far more than can be seen in the photographs taken that morning. Nearly all were from the north tower, which was hit first and collapsed last. Fewer than a dozen were from the south tower. “For those who jumped, the fall lasted 10 seconds. They struck the ground at just less than 150 miles per hour (240 km/h) -not fast enough to cause unconsciousness while falling, but fast enough to ensure instant death on impact. People jumped from all four sides of the north tower. They jumped alone, in pairs and in groups. Intense smoke and heat, rather than flames, pushed people into this horrific choice . Flight 11 struck the 94th through 98th floors of the north tower, shooting heat and smoke up elevator shafts and stairways in the center of the building. Within minutes, it would have been very difficult to breathe “, the media reported.

“In the film that the French brothers shot in the lobby of one of the towers, every few moments there’s a loud crashing sound. Eventually you realize that those are the people hitting the ground”, some said. It’s really horrible. FDNY Firefighter, Tommy Dunn, said: “We proceeded to get our hose rollups, put our masks on and walked to the front of the rig. At this point I could see why the cop had stopped us, there was a body directly in front of our rig. It was one of the jumpers from the upper floors and the best way I can describe it is that it looked like a dead animal that you might see on the side of the highway that had been hit by a couple of cars or trucks . There were several more bodies that were in the same shape as the one near our rig that were further down West Street. A firefighter was already killed by a jumper”. The pictures of the jumpers’ dead bodies are really horrible. At first, I wanted to put one of these horrible pictures here, but very soon I found that even myself can not see the picture more than once. But if you want to understand the depth of 9/11 tragedy, you should see the pictures of 9/11 dead bodies, jumpers or non-jumpers.

“News organizations decided not to use footage of the people falling to their deaths. No one wanted to talk about the jumpers. Many still refuse to accept that they jumped, rather that they fell or were forced out by flames and explosions. However, as the years have passed, these images capture what, for many, are acts of heroism. Some fell holding hands. Others appeared to have made makeshift parachutes from clothing knotted together “, some alternative media reported. The footage of jumpers’ dead bodies or the footage of the fear in their eyes when they wanted to jump, is so unpleasant and extremely horrible. It’s the pure truth. It’s a very horrible version of the bitter truth. It’s really understandable why many News organizations decided not to use footage. It’s like self-censorship, but the majority of the people, all around the world, can not bear watching these scenes. It can be so dangerous, too. Maybe after that the angry people try to tear the stupid Arab fanatics, like the stupid bastard Palestinian dancers, into pieces.

“Somebody yelled something was falling. We didn’t know if it was desks coming out. It turned out it was people coming out, and they started coming out one after the other … we saw the jumpers coming. We didn’t know what it was at first, but then the first body hit and then we knew what it was. And they were just like constant … I was getting sick. I felt like I was intruding on a sacrament. So me and another guy turned away and looked at a wall and we could still hear them hit”, another firefighter said. It’s so obvious that the poor jumpers did not have any alternative. “They jumped to escape the smoke and the fire; they jumped when the ceilings fell and the floors collapsed; they jumped just to breathe once more before they died “, the media reported. If you try to put yourself in their places, you can understand them.

“He got a call from his wife Alayne who worked in the tower and was trapped on the 97th floor. “She told me smoke was coming in the room, coming through the vents, her breath was labored … She said to me ‘I’m scared’ and she wasn’t a person who got scared. She said that she loved me and to tell the boys she loved them.” Alayne told her husband that she was going to try to escape to the lower floors and that she would call later. But he never heard from his wife again. Her body was found on the street in front of the building across from hers”, the media reported. It’s really horrible. It seems like a stupid joke, but some people say: “We advised the people who work in the skyscrapers to look into purchasing a mini parachute and take lessons in base jumping just in case they have to get out of the building, but they are trapped, like 9/11 case”. If you work in a skyscrapers, it’s not bad that you try to think about this matter seriously.
