Women, Suicide, and Foeticide

A woman accused of murdering her four-day-old baby girl by trying to kill herself with rat poison while pregnant. Bei Shuai, 34, a restaurant owner who moved to the US from China 10 years ago, was pregnant and planning to marry her boyfriend until she learned late last year that he was already married and he would be abandoning her. A few days later, on 23 December, she went to a hardware store, bought rat poison pellets, went back to her flat in Indianapolis and swallowed some. But she did not die immediately and was persuaded by friends to go to hospital. She was given treatment to counteract the poison and gave birth on New Year’s Eve, but her daughter, Angel, suffered seizures and died after four days. Shuai then had a second breakdown and spent a month in a psychiatric ward, after which she left to stay with friends and began rebuilding her life. But in March she was arrested and charged with murder and attempted foeticide. She now faces life imprisonment “If we allowed the state to put a woman in jail for anything that could pose a risk to her pregnancy, there would be nothing to stop the police putting in jail a woman who has a drink of wine or who smokes. So where do you draw the line?” ask Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, and it’s very important question. Linda Pence, Shuai’s lawyer, described the decision to prosecute her as “horrible” and “outrageous”. She disputes the prosecution’s claim that the baby died from rat poison, saying that Shuai received a host of medicines at the hospital, many of which could have caused the death. Kathrine Jack, a lawyer with the NAPW, said that after the initial suicide attempt, she had regained hope. “She has been on a rollercoaster,” said the lawyer, who argued that women such as Shuai should, rather than being locked up, receive medical and psychiatric help . It’s really true. The Kolbi-Molinas’ question is a very important question. There is two important matters that need serious attention:

1- The parents should be responsible. The pregnancy is a matter of both human life and animal life. In the animal life, the main goal is making baby and transferring genes as much as possible. The death of the foetus or the baby is not very important, and is considered as a natural error. The human life did not have any significant difference with the animal life, and just in the recent centuries the situation changed. Now we could talk about preventing pregnancy, 1 or 2 child per each parent, etc. The humans of the modern era, don’t want to be just a blind machine for transferring genes . They can choose to not transfer any gene, or in the future, they can choose to transfer selected genes. The modern humans want to have a healthy modern society, with a very low rates of crime. The healthy modern society needs healthy babies, and healthy and responsible parents. So the humans should be more careful and responsible about their foetus and their baby.

2- The foetus is a miniature human being, not a perfect human being. We know that the unplanned or unwanted pregnancies could make unhealthy babies, who are the future criminals or unhappy adults . We know that the health of mother is much more important than the health of an unborn foetus. So sometimes the abortion or foeticide, as some groups call it, is not only inevitable, but necessary. A woman that is on the edge of suicide is not a healthy mother, and she should abort her pregnancy. A woman that is very young, immature, and stupid should be able to abort her unwanted pregnancy. These women become irresponsible parents, who rear unhealthy and unhappy child.

Without doubt, the parents should be responsible, but punishing a woman that was on the edge of suicide, is itself a sign of irresponsibility . Where is the charlatan who make this poor woman pregnant? Both of them, the man and the woman, have the same level of stupidity and irresponsibility. The stupid Tories or Conservative-minds should solve the problems of the unhappy, unhealthy and poor adults, if they really care about the life of innocent babies or innocent children. Some Iranian psychologists say that each couple who want to make baby, must have a certificate; A certificate of ending a special training program. And without the certificate they should not have right to make baby and become parent. It seems reasonable.
