U.S. Government Shutdown ?

Yesterday, US federal government shutdown looms as Obama and John Boehner battle over budget and Planned Parenthood funding. On CNN, Republican senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas tells: “ The debt ceiling is going to be Armageddon .” But apparently the Republicans have agreed to drop defunding Planned Parenthood in return for a further $1bn in cuts. As we said before, the US economic crisis is very very serious But the Republicans are risking a government shutdown over a measly $350 million in funds for Planned Parenthood. It’s not about $700 billion budget of Department of Defense (DoD), or about the huge tax cut and Medicare. It’s mainly about $350 million, i.e. 0.0005 of DoD’s budget !! But Planned Parenthood has become a symbol; A symbol of the kind of government spending that Republicans reject. The clientele of Planned Parenthood is groups that are considered unworthy by Conservatives: lower-income, female, assumed to be unmarried and/or queer. Conservatives have argued, roughly forever, that such women should be cut off from any federal spending, with the hope that deprivation will force them to marry for sustenance !! Planned Parenthood’s director Cecile Richards is interviewed by the Huffington Post about being used as a political football by Republicans: “One in five women in America have been to a Planned Parenthood health center for basic health care. Ninety-seven percent of our services are basic preventative care that women rely on in communities across this country. Women and men of all parties and all walks of life are concerned about these kinds of efforts to play politics with women’s health care access”. The Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide a wide range of health care, and more than 90 percent is preventive, primary care, which helps prevent unintended pregnancies through contraception, reduce the spread of s-e-x-u-a-lly transmitted infections through testing and treatment. Planned Parenthood was formed in 1916 in Brooklyn as the first US birth control clinic. It now has more than 800 clinics across the country

The main sticking point appears to be ideological , with the Republicans wanting to withdraw $75m funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides health advice and testing for women at 800 health centers. The Republicans claim the handout is money for abortion. so what ?! Abortion is not illegal. Abortion is better than killing innocent people in other countries. The Democrats insist the agency provides an essential health service for poor women in remote areas. The ultra-stupid Sarah Palin has broken her silence of several minutes, via Twitter. “America can’t afford cowboy poetry? And of course “subsidising abortion”!! with federal funds is already illegal !!” she said. But apparently “subsidising killing people in other countries”, i.e. “subsidising DoD” is legal !! . Obama had told Boehner on Thursday night at the White House he wanted a deal by Friday morning but the morning passed and no deal was in sight. The last government shutdown in the US was in 1996. Congress after the last shutdown in 1995-6 voted to compensate people for lost pay but there is no guarantee they will do so this time round. A Democratic congressman, Jim Moran, citing Republican opposition to federal spending, said: “There will be no reimbursement.” !! CNN reports that the Statue of Liberty in New York will be closed for visitors in the event of a shutdown. National parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite would also close. About 800,000 of the federal government’s 2.8 million civilian staff face staying at home. The tax office would stop processing many returns, the national housing body would stop new loan guarantees, and the national institutes of health would start to refuse new patients. In 1995-6 shutdown, about 20,000-30,000 visa applications a day went unprocessed at US embassies. The White House, like other federal bodies, would have to lay off staff. One of the consequences of the 1996 shutdown was that Monica Lewinsky was on duty at a time when many staff were on forced leave !!! In the last shutdowns Bill Clinton received most blame. But afterwards his poll figures rose, possibly even helping his re-election. There have been 17 shutdowns since 1977. The last one, in 1995-1996 (for six days in November 1995 and three weeks from December 1995 to January 1996) cost $1.4bn

Surveys of voters in key electoral states such as Iowa suggest Sarah Palin’s star has been falling. Opinion polls reflect a similar trend among the Tea Parties generally. A Wall Street Journal/NBC poll this week suggested that 44% of Americans feel negatively towards the movement, up from 30% in January. Tea Party demonstrators outside the US Capitol to pressurise Republicans into make further budget cuts. But it’s a hypocritical act. Their protests is not about about $700 billion budget of DoD, or about the huge tax cut. It’s mainly about Planned Parenthood’s $350 million, i.e. 0.0005 of DoD’s budget ! This war on budget, is important for the whole world, especially for Iran and Iranians. It could be going to be Armageddon
